What causes sagging of breasts?-[dotlife:衣]

What causes sagging of breasts?

Sagging or drooping of breasts is a natural, inevitable process that happens to all women at some point - except those with fairly small breasts. The most notable sagging happens with the process called breast involution (see below), but breasts can start drooping a little at any age, because they do NOT have muscles in them. They have ligaments and connective tissue. When the gravity pulls the breasts down, those ligaments and the skin can stretch, and so the breast then droops. This depends on the elasticity of your skin and of your ligaments, as determined by your genes and diet, and also on normal aging processes. Obviously large breasts will sag easier since the gravity is pulling them down more.

Breast involution is a process where the milk-making system inside the breast shrinks because it's not needed anymore. This happens either after weaning, or right after pregnancy if you don't breastfeed at all, or during menopause. When the tissues inside breast shrink, and the skin surrounding it doesn't, the breast can look 'empty' and saggy. Over time, some fat gets deposited back to the breast so it will look somewhat fuller but sagging usually remains.

Will bras keep the breasts from sagging?

Bras will keep your breasts from sagging while you're wearing them - but not for the remainder of time. There is no published medical literature showing that bras prevent sagging. Even the bra industry seems to know this, as the following quote illustrates:

"We have no evidence that wearing a bra could prevent sagging, because the breast itself is not muscle, so keeping it toned up is an impossibility. What it can do, particularly for larger-breasted women, is obviously to provide the comfort and the support. So, if a woman wants a particular breast profile, she will buy a particular brand, and that is what they're designed for. There's no permanent effect on the breast from wearing a particular bra. The bra will give you the shape the bra's been designed to give while you're wearing it. Of course, when you take it off, you go 'au natural.' "executive John Dixey at Bras, Bare Facts documentary

However, there is some support for the idea that breasts in bras actually sag more (when bra is taken off). How could that be since the main idea of bras is to lift the breasts upward? The main idea is that the ligaments which support breasts in normal circumstances, would atrophy (get thinner and weaker) when breasts are immobilized within bras and don't have to bear their own weight.

There are lots of studies showing that ligaments and tendons in limbs do atrophy when the limb is immobilized. Bras obviously prevent the the natural slight up-down movement of breasts when we walk, and let shoulders bear the weight of breasts. If breast ligaments behave like limb ligaments, it may be a matter of "use it or lose it".

One study published on the subject of bras and sagging was done in 1991, in Japan. The study suggests that a bra can actually increase breast sagging rather than the opposite. The abstract says (emphasis mine):

"Eleven adult female subjects aged 22-39 years wore a certain brassiere for 3 months while anthropometry and moire fringe photographs on the anterior trunk were taken regularly once a week. After the 3 months, the brassiere was not worn for another 3 months. Then the measurements and photogrammetry were repeated for comparison using superimposed moire configurations. The results are summarized as follows. Regardless of slim or obese trunk, subjects with pendent breasts showed the highest degree of breast form "correction" from wearing the brassiere. In all subjects, after 3 months of brassiere constraint, the underbust circumference was smaller but the chest circumference became enlarged, the distance between the right and left nipples became wider, and the breasts tended to hang down. This change was more marked in obese subjects with pendent breasts. And when this type of subject wore a "well-fitted" brassiere for a long time, her breast form became developed, that is, her breasts hung down more." Ashizawa K, Sugane A, Gunji T Institute of Human Living Sciences, Otsuma Women's University, Tokyo, Japan: Breast Form Changes Resulting From A Certain Brassiere Journal of Hum. Ergol.(Tokyo) 1990 Jun; 19(1):53-62.

The French study the sagging and bra wearing even further

Another study with similar results was conducted in 2003 by Laetitia Pierrot and Jean-Denis Rouillon. In it, 250 women who practiced sports stopped wearing a bra for one year. They were followed regularly with questionnaires and biometric measurements. At the 6-week checkup, the ladies experienced some discomfort from abandoning the bra, but this disappeared later, and by the end of the year 88% of the women reported improved comfort compared to before the study.

The measurements showed firmer, more elevated and perkier breasts. For example, the distance from the nipple to the shoulder bone was reduced, which means the breasts sagged less. They noted a better muscular development in the rotator muscles of the shoulders and the pectoralis major. Also, stretch marks on breasts became less visible.

[The development of the breasts after discontinuing wearing bras. Preliminary longitudinal study of 33 volunteer sportswomen. Thesis presented December 19th, 2003, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Besancon, France.]
Here is an article discussing that study (in French): Le soutien-gorge en question. See here for an English translation. There is also a more recent study by Jean-Denis Rouillon: Santé Le port du soutien-gorge déconseillé par un médecin bisontin (Besançon doctor advises against wearing bras ).

Sports bras and jogging

There is one more notable study concerning sagging and bra wearing, which found that jogging caused breasts to bounce enough to sretch the Cooper's ligaments inside the breast. Naturally, stretched ligaments would cause the breast to sag more.

The lesson to take home from this study is that if you engage in jogging or some other type of very active sport, sports bras are recommendable.

Conclusion

To prevent or lessen the eventual sagging that will come with age, let breasts be free of bras when you can so that the ligaments inside them can be "in use"$$ however protect the breasts from bouncing too much by using proper sports bras, when doing intense physical activity such as running.

Proper nutrition will probably also be helpful to maintain elasticity of those ligaments and of the skin.

10 Signs You've Had One Too Many To Drink!-[dotlife:食]

I think at some point everyone has had a little too much to drink. Though we may not remember it, you can pretty much guarantee that someone else has! To make matters worse they probably have proof of it. If you are not used to drinking, and you have encountered anything similar to the situations below then it is pretty clear that you have had too much to drink.

10: You wake up the next morning with body parts drawn all over your face. You can pretty much bet that someone has also taken pictures of you in this state! These pictures are most likely to show up in your local paper under the birthday announcements courtesy of your drinking buddies!

9: You wake up with unidentified substances in your hair. You are sure that some of it is vomit....but you are not sure if it is yours!

8: People you have not spoken to in ages start returning your messages. Funny thing is that you don't remember leaving them any messages. Its never a good idea to drink and dial.

7: You wake up in your apartment wearing everything except your underwear. Worse case scenario you are wearing someone else's underwear, and you are the only one in the apartment.

6: People show you pictures of yourself at various parties that you don't remember being at.

5: You wake up with a tattoo somewhere on your body, that was not there earlier that night when you started drinking...hmmm. You can only hope that it is a good tattoo and not some random guy's name that you met at the bar!

4: You have runs in your nylons from crawling through the gravel in the bar parking lot to get into the cab.

3: When you get home you realize you are not wearing any shoes. You vaguely remember leaving the second shoe at the last bar you were at. You are way too drunk to even try and remember where you left your first shoe. This is why friends don't let friends drink in heels.

2: You decide to walk the twenty blocks home from the bar to save on cab fare. Never mind the fact that is twenty degrees below zero outside!

1: You walk into a restaurant and proceed to enter the kitchen, insisting that you are going to make your own damn meal! Sadly I actually witnessed a friend of mine do this. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my entire life. I have a feeling that the waitress and the police officers didn't find it nearly as funny as I did.

Whether you are an amateur or a pro at the party scene, I can guarantee that you have had experiences like these. It may not have been funny at the time, but aren't you glad that we can laugh about it now?(Via associatedcontent, write by lacey derusha)

Sexual Satisfaction Rises for Women Using Testosterone Patch-[dotlife:玩]

By David Olmos

Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Sex was more satisfying for women who used a testosterone skin patch, a study found.

The trial was sponsored by Procter & Gamble Co., the Cincinnati-based maker of a testosterone patch called Intrinsa that is approved for sale to women in Europe and not in the U.S. More than 800 women who had reported personal distress linked with low desire were recruited for the study.

Previous research showed that women with low sexual desire who were given testosterone combined with estrogen therapy were more inclined to report satisfying sex. Many women have stopped the combination therapy because of studies linking it to cancer, cardiovascular and other risks, so the new study looked at women given testosterone without estrogen.

``The question was whether estrogen was necessary to get the same effects from the testosterone,'' Robin Kroll, director of Women's Clinical Research Center and the Menopause Center in Seattle, said in an interview today. ``We found that it could work,'' even if a woman wasn't on estrogen.

Postmenopausal women with low libido who used the patch had a ``modest but meaningful'' rise in satisfying sexual episodes compared with those on a placebo patch, according to the new research, which will be published in tomorrow's New England Journal of Medicine. Breast cancer was diagnosed in four women who wore the testosterone patch in the study, compared with none given a placebo patch, a difference the authors said ``may be due to chance'' yet should be studied.

Satisfying Episodes

Researchers analyzed data from 814 women who were given daily doses of 150 micrograms or 300 micrograms of testosterone or a placebo, or dummy, treatment. While both groups on the patch reported increased sexual desire, only those on the higher dose had a statistically significant increase in satisfying sexual episodes, according to the study.

The 300-microgram-dose group reported an increase of 2.1 satisfying sexual episodes per month for each four weeks compared with an average increase of less than one episode for those on placebo, the study found. Levels of free testosterone found in the 300-microgram-dose group were close to those usually seen in women ages 18 to 24 years.

The study included women from the U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K. and Sweden, ages 20 to 70 years old, who were postmenopausal for at least a year. It included both women who had gone through natural menopause and those who had gone into menopause after removal of ovaries.

Cancer Cases

Of the four cases of breast cancer in women who wore the testosterone patch, one had symptoms reported retroactively as starting before the treatment. A second case was detected three months after the treatment ended.

Procter & Gamble withdrew application to the Food and Drug Administration to market the Intrinsa patch in the U.S. in December 2004, after the FDA staff said more research was needed to prove the patch wouldn't raise the risk of heart disease and cancer.

``We continue to have discussions with the FDA to determine if there is an appropriate path to market for this product,'' said Tom Millikin, a P&G spokesman, in a telephone interview today.

Some doctors already prescribe testosterone treatment for postmenopausal women with low sex desire, the most common sexual complaint among women, said Kroll. Because there are no U.S.- approved testosterone therapies for women, physicians typically prescribe lower doses of drugs approved for men, such as Solvay Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s AndroGel. Some physicians refer patients to compounding pharmacies that develop custom testosterone gels or lotions, she said.

A drawback of the compounds is that they are absorbed into patients' bodies differently, complicating the task of determining dosage, said Glenn Braunstein, an endocrinologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who was an author of the new study.

Autovolantor: Flying Ferrari-[dotlife:行]

September 9, 2008 Moller International has announced that it has designed a hybrid flying car. The two-seater autovolantor is fashioned in the shape of a Ferrari 599 GTB with wings and is claimed to be capable of lifting off vertically from a traffic jam and flying at up to 150 mph for a short distance (about 15 minutes). The autovolantor is designed to function on the road very much like a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) using one of its eight Rotapower engines to generate enough electrical power to drive for up to 40 miles.

Moller International received a request to design this vehicle from a wealthy foreign businessman who was unable to commute from the city to his country home due to the overcrowded streets of Moscow. Moller conducted a preliminary analysis and found that a hybrid propulsion system powered by engines and electric motors together with its propriety eight-fan stabilized aircraft design could be blended to create the autovolantor.

Scale model wind tunnel testing and further analysis predicted surprisingly good all around performance for the combined car-aircraft according to Moller. While the cost for developing a prototype was estimated at over US$5 million, Moller believes production versions of the autovolantor could be produced for under US$250,000 in modest volumes.
The big question that remains is how the autovolantor could be used, and as we have discussed in Gizmag many times previously, regulations and licensing would certainly NOT permit its use within the foreseeable future.

“It seems that it might be practical in some parts of the world, but in our view a roadable aircraft (versus a flying car) is still more practical for the greatest number of people,” said Dr. Paul Moller, founder and President of Moller International. “The autovolantor is technically possible, but flying it in US cities is not going to be politically acceptable until it has been deployed successfully in other roles and environments. Practical or not, it excites the imagination to think about being able to rise vertically out of a traffic jam and just go!” he concluded.
The presentation on the autovolantor delivered to the 2008 SAE Wichita Aviation Technology Congress & Exhibition can be found in the image gallery for this article.
It should also be noted that Moller International is now 25 years old, and was formed with the expressed purpose of creating VTOL vehicles - Moller had been previously successful in a number of ventures and has demonstrated the viabilility of his ideas, but has yet to produce a commercially available aircraft or flying car. Time will tell.(VIA gizmag)

A speech by the new president-elect of the United States of America, Barack Obama-[dotlife:玩]

This victory belongs to you !

Hello, Chicago.

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.

We are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Sen. McCain.

Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they've achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.

And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady Michelle Obama.

Sasha and Malia I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the new White House.

And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother's watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my sister Maya, my sister Alma, all my other brothers and sisters, thank you so much for all the support that you've given me. I am grateful to them.

And to my campaign manager, David Plouffe, the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best -- the best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America.

To my chief strategist David Axelrod who's been a partner with me every step of the way.

To the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.

But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to. It belongs to you. It belongs to you.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause.

It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.

It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth.

This is your victory.

And I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you didn't do it for me.

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.

Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.

There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills or save enough for their child's college education.

There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.

I promise you, we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can't solve every problem.

But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.

In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.

Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.

Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.

As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.

And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.

To those -- to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.

That's the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can be perfected. What we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome." Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination.

And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.

Yes we can.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.

Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.

Getting Paid to Travel-[dotlife:玩]

Wouldn't it be nice to get paid to travel? You can see the country, spend a minimal sum of money, and draw a paycheck. It's not out of reach at all. How can you can paid to travel?

One of the ways to do this is to be a Tour Bus Driver. To drive a bus, you will need a chauffeur's license. You might also be required to take a physical and a drug test, so that the prospective employer knows they have a healthy job candidate.

How does this get you paid to travel? The tour bus company might advertise a trip to a certain location, and a group of people charter a bus to this destination. Of course, the trip needs a driver, and this where you come in, and get paid to travel.

If the tour will be a long one, there will likely be two drivers to relieve each other. The trip often includes your motel stay and meals, leaving you with little expense while traveling. Many times, besides the pay check, group members tip the driver, adding to your pay.

Not all tours will be overnight ones, or ones that you travel a great distance however. Some tour trips might be an hour away from your home, such as going to a zoo or museum. Obviously, these will not tip you, and you might find yourself thinking that you are not being paid to travel. While these local trips might have you questioning the idea of getting paid to travel, they still pay you and are certainly worthwhile.

A tour bus generally travels on an itinerary, meaning that you must be possess good time management skills. You will also be expected to log your travel.

Another wonderful benefit of tour bus driving is the amount of people you meet. If you make a good impression with the passengers, which you should, chances are those that take regular tours to certain destinations will request you again as their driver. Drivers should be friendly and outgoing yet be open to diverse backgrounds.

Some duties you might have as a tour bus driver:

=>Act as tour guide by pointing out areas of interest.

=>Escort tourists on sightseeing or educational excursions.

=>Ensures that the group arrives and departs events in a timely matter.

=>Load and unload luggage, checking to make sure all is accounted for.

=>Ensures that the coach is cleaned and ready to travel.

To find tour bus companies hiring drivers, look in the yellow pages for bus tours, buses-charter and rental, bus lines, and tours. Travel agencies might also be able to connect you with tour bus companies.
